A simple email newsletter template – Dinosaurs & drink bottles!

February 10, 2010 •

I received an email, yesterday, from a lady named Janelle, who failed to step back quickly enough when her boss asked who’d like to volunteer to write the company e-newsletter.

Janelle wanted to know…

She wanted to know if I had some sort of template for writing e-newsletters, what’s required if she re-publishes a free-reprint article off the web, and do I have any other advice.

Perhaps it’s just the tiredness talking, but I replied as follows. Hopefully you can see past my ridiculous subject matter, and actually make use of it. If not, then at least enjoy the silliness!

My reply – a simple e-newsletter template

“Thanks for your email. I don’t really have a template that you could follow, but I can quickly lay it out for you. Assuming it’s an emailed newsletter, your email should have a short intro/summary of the issue, followed by a bulleted list containing a teaser / snippet of each article, and a Read More… link. Hi <firstname>,

This week has been another huge one at ACME Drink Bottles. In addition to having a head office demolished by a Brontosaurus, we engaged two new staff members, and released a new white paper on how best to drink from a drink bottle. You’ll find a link to that white paper below. Also below are a collection of helpful articles on drink bottles, drinking and dinosaurs. Hope you find them interesting.

  • Drinking from bottles 101 — The most succinct and helpful white paper on drinking from bottles, yet. Barry walks you through the entire process. Read more…
  • Why dinosaurs and drink bottles don’t mix — And it’s not just because dinosaurs have no lips! Find out why drink bottle incompetence caused the extinction of dinosaurs. Read more…
  • Drink bottle collection sells for $54.94 — The world’s largest drink bottle collection has gone under the hammer in Western Sydney, and it attracted a record bid. Owners — old and new — are reportedly very happy. Read more…

Please enjoy our articles. And as always, please feel free to contact us, if you find yourself missing your mouth too often. We’re always here to help.

Kind regards
The Editor

Obviously each of the links above links to the entire article on your website.

If you’re going to use someone else’s article (e.g. one you’ve found on ezinearticles.com), all you have to do is observe the original author’s reprint guidelines. Mostly that means you have to include their author bio, which usually has their name, a short description of who they are, their contact details, and a link to their website. It’s this last element that’s most important to the original author. When you link to their website, you help their search engine ranking.”

Clear, simple, brilliant. Thanks for the great template. This could work for anyone selling anything. I'm going to use it in my weekly update ezine for my Video training business. Also, your recommendations for using articles from ezineartices.com can help anyone create a decent ezine with very little time or effort. Cheers Mike, Gold Coast

Using other people's articles... great way to keep your newsletter output consistent (and therefore your mailing list stays warm) even when you're struggling with your own content production.

C'mon, it can't be that all dinosaurs were wiped out because they had a problem with bottles. A triceratops'es horn is the perfect bottle opener.... Another useful post Glenn, thanks.

Hey Peter. I knew a triceratops once. He couldn't tell his horn from his, well... horn!
